Using Essential Oils Safely

Are essential oils safe to use? Absolutely!

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, which means they are incredibly potent. A little bit goes a long way. doTERRA essential oils are safe, effective, and affordable. I have used doTERRA essential oils since 2016 and love all the health benifits that come from using them.

Three Ways To Use doTERRA Essential Oils


Diffuse or inhale to:

  • Create a specific environment

  • Freshen the air

  • Open airways

Diffuse smaller amounts of essential oil multiple times through out the day. The right amount of essentil oil to diffuse depends on the size of the diffuser your using and ventalation of the room. In general use 1 to 3 drops of essential oil per 100 mL of water is a good place to start. You can always add more if you are diffusing in a larger room or outdoor space.


Apply to affected area for:

  • Localized benifits

  • Dilute with Fractionated Coconut Oil for best results

You should always avoid applying oils to certain areas like the eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. Wash your hands well with soap and water after topical application. If you accidently get an essential oil in your eye apply a carrier oil and pat dry with a paper towel. Repeat the process until you feel relief.

Dilution is important to understand. To dilute an essential oil , you combine it with a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil. Other examples of carrier oils include jojoba oil, olive oil, avocado oil or almond oil. A carrier oil Carry essential oils deep into the skin layers. Your body size, health and age should be considered before application. Also consult your healthcare professional for the elderly, infants, children , women who are pregnant and nursing, and if you are currently taking any kinds of medications.

The general rule for application is one drop of essential oil combined with three to five drops of carrier oil before toppical application.

When applying an essential oil for the first time, perform a sensitivity test to determine how your skin will react. Apply a small dab of essential oil , mixed in carrier oil to a inconspiculous area of the skin and wait. Check the applied area each hour for a few hours to make sure no sensitivity or irritation has occured.

It is important to understand that not ALL oils are ingestible. Always check the label on the essential oil bottle to determine guidelines for internal use. For internal use dilute 1 to 2 drops to a 4 oz. glass of water. Be sure to use a glass or metal container, beacause certain essential oils can break down plastic. Add a few drops to an empty veggie capsule. Place a drop or two directly under the tongue.

Before placing oils under the tongue , you need to know that some essential oils are strong or hot. Essential oils like cassia, cinnamon, clove, cumin, oregano, and thyme are best used in a veggie capsule.


Watch for signs of sensitivity, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, skin irritation, or difficulty breathing. These are rarely experienced , but good to be aware of. When taking an essential oil internally , you should start with the smallest amount possible. 1 to 2 drops. No more than 20 drops of essential oils should be consumed internally in a 24 hour period. If used incorrectly essential oils have a potential for toxicity. (harmful or damaging to the body.) Just like to much water, vitamins, and alcohol can become toxic if used in exessive amounts. You would have to consume far beyond the suggested amount to put yourself within a dangerous range of toxicity.
